Shigeki Matsuyama: Portrait Of Dazzle

GR gallery is excited to present “Portrait of Dazzle”, the first solo exhibition of Shigeki Matsuyama with the gallery and in New York. A total of 15 paintings will be shown; this body of Matsuyama’s work grows out of his inspiration that is taken from things and perceptions around him; things like a sense of unease and distrust towards media like the Internet and TV. Shigeki takes a pictorial approach on how each of his paintings are depicted; sounding off on the vast expansion of technology and how it affects the consciousness of everyday life for the modern living people.
Opening reception: July 8th, 4:00pm – 8:00pm ET (Exhibition Dates: July 7 – July 29, 2022). Members of the press can contact GR gallery in advance to schedule a private viewing. RSVP is required for the vernissage and attendance will be regulated according to updated New York City health care guidelines.
“Portrait of Dazzle”, curated in collaboration with ‘City Of talents’, goes through Shigeki’s process of reflecting his approach by revealing the changes and effects that modern technology has on living people today.
According the artist words: “A portrait is a depiction of a specific individual. It became an established style of painting during the Renaissance, and since then, many artists have created portraits with a wide variety of themes. Some portraits have pursued realism while others have emphasized or exaggerated the beauty or ugliness of their subjects. (Source: This is media ”Syouzou-ga”).
The series Portrait of dazzle uses facial photos found among the countless selfies and snaps uploaded on the Internet. With a video projector, the eyes from the photos were projected and traced onto a silhouette of another person, whose race, sex, hairstyle, or body shape differs from those of the original, thereby creating portraits reflecting anonymity and the uncertain veracity of information on the Internet.”
Shigeki Matsuyama, born in Japan in 1973, from 1998, worked as a freelance illustrator creating product illustrations and advertising. Immediately following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, Matsuyama held a solo exhibition in Tokyo called UNEASINESS. This inspired him to deviate from his 13-year career as an illustrator and begin working as an artist, so that he could create more conceptual work. Currently, he is working not only on tableaus, but also on objets and installations. “When I’m creating, I often take inspiration from the things around me; things like a sense of unease and distrust towards media like the Internet and TV, reactions towards them, and their effects, for example.”
