Kosuke Ajiro (b. 1980) based in Tokyo, Japan has always been aware of an unknown world in his head inspired by childhood memories, historical influences and love for fantastical adventure. His ever expanding world known as ‘The Kingdom of Sally’ evolved through a dreamy mix of creatures and characters all engaging in a unique culture full of festivals, spiritual beliefs and languages that continue to unfold and be discovered by the archeologist, also known as Ajiro himself. The whimsical paintings of acrylic and water color act as a record of this forgotten civilization that perished around the medieval period of its development. Aijiro also uses ceramic sculpture, animation, original music and mixed media installations to further capture the beauty of this elusive realm. ‘The kingdom of Sally’ is heavily inspired by Japanese narrative scrolls, medieval European manuscripts and the style of Hieronymus Bosch. The finished pieces are sometimes presented with a powdery quality clinging to the surface to show traces of age and further solidify the kingdom as a genuine discovery. Ajiro’s unique visual works have been exhibited in Solo shows across Shinjuku Ganka Art Gallery, Tokyo, Gallery ie, Osaka, Greenray+marüte, Taiwan, and Kousagisha Gallery, Kyoto and in group shows at QUIET GALLERY, Hong Kong, Harmas Gallery, Nagoya and Biscuit Gallery, Tokyo as well as published works in literary collections and children’s picture books. The ongoing adventures are beautifully captured in each finished piece, bringing Ajiro joy as both an artist and as someone dedicated to one day uncovering the entire kingdom through his archeologist persona.
