Jordan Sullivan is a self-taught artist based in Queens, New York. His work captures a raw view of the United States which highlights strange beauty in the absurdity, isolation, addiction, and horror that haunts the country. With Sullivan’s experience working as a counselor at rehabs and moving around the US in his youth, he doesn’t shy away from plunging into the dark core of reality with his paintings which are often described as hyper realistic in style. His paintings focus on familiar places the “underbelly” American might pass, live or linger in using bold color to emphasize form and decoration with details carrying out the movement and behavior of his wry subjects. Sullivan believes that although some might view his art as “straight to the point”, it ultimately exists as an open-ended question that might allow others to see something differently. His work is an attempt to make sense of a world through nonsense often driving the point that we as humans have evolved into something more absurd in addition to our world being just as strange as anything in outer space.
